Running a Business Through Real Life: What This Year Taught Me as a Virtual Assistant

It’s been a while since I’ve sat down to write a blog post for Lucy’s Desk.
Not because I lost interest—but because life got full in the way it sometimes does.
Over the past year, my business has grown, my workload has stayed steady, and behind the scenes, I’ve been navigating some major life changes. It’s been a season of learning how to balance showing up for my clients while also showing up for my life.
And if I’m being honest, something had to give for a while—and that ended up being this space.
But I’m back, and this time with a little more clarity on what I want this blog to be.
What This Year Really Looked Like
From the outside, staying busy in business sounds like the goal—and it is.
But what people don’t always talk about is how quickly “busy” can turn into “at capacity.”
This past year, I found myself deep in client work, managing tasks, supporting day-to-day operations, and making sure everything stayed on track. At the same time, I was also navigating personal transitions that required my time and energy in a completely different way.
It pushed me to figure out what balance actually looks like—not the aesthetic version, but the real one.
What I Learned Along the Way
1. Systems matter more than motivationThere were days I didn’t feel “on,” but my systems carried me through. Simple things like task tracking, organized workflows, and clear processes made all the difference.
2. Capacity is real—and it deserves respectJust because I can take on more doesn’t mean I should. Learning my limits has helped me show up better for the clients I already have.
3. Consistency doesn’t have to mean constant outputI used to think showing up meant doing everything all the time. Now I know it can look like choosing what matters most in each season—and being okay with that.
4. Flexibility is a strength, not a setbackBeing able to adjust, pivot, and rework my schedule has been one of the biggest advantages of running my own business.
What’s Next for Lucy’s Desk
Instead of trying to do everything at once, I’m focusing on rebuilding this space in a way that feels sustainable.
That means:
Monthly blog posts (something I can actually stick to)
Sharing more real, behind-the-scenes insights from my work
Creating content that’s helpful, not just polished
Lucy’s Desk has always been about making business support feel approachable and human—and I want this blog to reflect that just as much as my services do.
