How to Prepare for a Productive Discovery Call

Booking a discovery call can feel exciting — and a little nerve-wracking. You’re ready to bring on support, but you might be wondering:

  • What do I need to ask?

  • What if I forget something?

  • How do I know if this VA is the right fit?

Take a breath. A discovery call isn’t a test — it’s a conversation. And a little prep can help you get the clarity you need.

Here’s how to walk into your call feeling confident and ready:

✅ 1. Get clear on your needs

Write down the tasks that feel heavy, time-consuming, or outside your expertise. They don’t need to be perfectly organized — just a simple list of what you’d love to take off your plate.

Examples:

  • Inbox management

  • Scheduling and calendar coordination

  • Client onboarding/offboarding

  • Social media support

  • Organizing SOPs or internal systems

✅ 2. Know your budget + time expectations

Think about how many hours you might need each week or month. Do you want ongoing support or help with a specific project? Having a rough idea helps us discuss packages that fit your goals.

✅ 3. Be honest about your working style

Do you like quick emails? Weekly check-ins? Are you more hands-on or prefer your VA to take the lead? Sharing your preferences helps set us both up for a great working relationship.

✅ 4. Bring your questions!

This is your chance to ask anything — from how I manage client tasks, to what tools I use, to my availability and response times. A few sample questions:

  • How do you track tasks and progress?

  • What’s your process for onboarding new clients?

  • How do you handle urgent or last-minute requests?

✅ 5. Remember: It’s a two-way fit

You’re interviewing me as much as I’m getting to know you. The goal is to find a VA who not only has the skills you need, but feels like a good match for your business vibe and values.

The right VA relationship is built on trust, clear expectations, and great communication — and it all starts here.
